Another shot from the 4-wheelin' tour we did on the honeymoon. More photos here
Here is the back story:
The Sandy Village Beach Resort opened in 2000 or so. It was one of the first resorts in the Punta Cana area. Unfortunately the beach was lousy. Small and full of sharp coral. Word began to spread about how bad it was. People with reservations started cancelling. People stopped coming altogether. The bank foreclosed on the resort. The owner skipped town. The staff, (unpaid in 2 months), got wind of this. They showed up to work like any other day, but then proceeded to loot the place. They took everything they could. Once people in the 2 nearby villages saw people walking up the streets with toilets, sinks, mattresses etc, you can only imagine what happened next. Every thing was ransacked. What was left, got destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. Now it sits abandoned. It was going to become a paintball spot, but rumor now is that the bank will someday try and reopen it.
